Common questions about flooring quantities

How many boxes of SPC flooring do I need?

Measure the room length and width in metres and multiply them for the floor area. SPC boards here are supplied at 2.2 square metres per carton, so divide your area by 2.2 and round up. Always add 5 to 10 percent for cutting waste — a 4m x 5m room is 20 square metres, which is about 10 cartons once waste is allowed for.

How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?

Allow 5 percent for a simple square or rectangular room, and 10 percent where the room has alcoves, angles or a diagonal laying pattern. Herringbone and chevron patterns need 15 percent because far more boards are cut. Buying slightly over is normal; running short mid-installation usually means a different batch and a visible colour difference.

Do I need underlay under SPC flooring?

Many SPC boards come with an EVA or IXPE backing already attached, in which case no separate underlay is needed. If your boards have no backing, you need underlay for comfort, sound and to even out small subfloor imperfections. Underlay is bought by the square metre, so use the same area figure as the flooring.

How do I measure a room that is not a rectangle?

Split the room into rectangles, work out each one separately, and add them together. For a bay or an alcove, treat it as its own small rectangle. It is safer to measure the widest point of each section, since flooring can be cut down but not stretched.

How much skirting or beading do I need?

Skirting follows the perimeter of the room, which is twice the length plus twice the width, less the width of any doorways. Order it in whole lengths and allow a little extra for mitred corners, where each cut wastes a short piece.
